About The Foundation Board of Directors

Because The Council Foundation is a non-profit entity – separate from The Council – The Foundation is governed by its own Board of Directors who embody its core values, embrace its mission and vision, and are committed to its purpose. Selecting directors for this Board demands both strategic foresight and a values-driven approach. The Board must be composed of individuals who demonstrate:

  • A deep personal commitment to The Foundation’s mission
  • Intentional and active engagement in Foundation Board business
  • Competence in executing the work required

The Ideal Candidate

When evaluating a proposed nominee for the Foundation Board, the Nominating Committee considers the following criteria and key attributes:

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute diverse perspectives and professional experience
  • Strategic, forward-thinking mindset with the ability to anticipate change and support the Foundation’s long-term relevance and impact
  • Experience in key functional areas such as finance, fundraising, governance, communications, or strategic planning
  • Prior service on nonprofit or professional boards
  • Capacity to strengthen the Foundation Board through collaborative leadership and informed decision-making

Commitment to Active Engagement

Serving on The Foundation Board requires a significant investment of time and energy. Directors must:

  • Regularly attend two in-person meetings, and select virtual meetings:
    • Midyear Board Meeting & Strategic Work Session (Late April/early May location at Board Chair discretion)
    • Council Foundation Board Meeting (Late October/early November, location at Board Chair discretion)
    • Virtual meetings for specific committees/initiatives (as needed)
  • Actively participate in committees
  • Support fundraising efforts and contribute to The Foundation’s financial sustainability
