China is moving forward with its controversial cybersecurity law, which could be disastrous for foreign and domestic businesses in the Middle Kingdom. The current draft of the law stipulates that network providers comply with social morals, accept supervision from the government and public, and must keep all personal information of Chinese citizens and “important business data” within Chinese borders. Foreign economic partners, namely the U.S. and EU, have found that Chinese cybersecurity laws are excessive and burdensome for foreign firms. The Chinese government says that the security is in place to protect against cyber-attacks and terrorism, even going as far as banning Google and Facebook. The major concern is that these broadly defined laws give the government more freedom.
