The lawsuit brought against Target by credit card issuers following last years data breach could have repercussions in future cases when retailers are brought to court.
According to Business Insurance, “at this preliminary stage of the litigation, plaintiffs have plausibly (pleaded) a general negligence case,” which means that if the the case is not dismissed Target will be held “responsible for the damages the hackers caused even though there was no direct, contractual relationship between the retailer and the credit card issuers.”
