Congressional officials have confirmed an investigation of “covert Russian operations in the United States to sow public distrust in the presidential and in U.S. political institutions.” While it is clear the Russian government has some involvement in the recent politically connected data breaches, such as the recent hack on the DNC, U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies are attempting to gauge the “scope and intent” of Russian-backed cyber events. The investigation is being led by director of national intelligence James Clapper due to fears that any additional events could lead to a disruption in the election process. Fears have also surfaced that cybercriminals affiliated with the Russian Government might go after voting machines to alter the outcome of the November election.
