Express Scripts, a pharmacy benefit manager (PBM), is losing health insurer Anthem as a client, after being accused of not negotiating lower prices for prescription drugs. The split is highlighting some contentious practices ensnaring the pharmaceutical benefits industry.
The move promises to increase scrutiny of PBM practices in the context of rising drug costs and healthcare spending. Anthem is reportedly responsible for nearly 18 percent of Express Scripts’ revenue.
