Ron Sandack, the floor leader of the GOP minority in the Illinois House, resigned, citing “cybersecurity issues” for the reason of his departure. This is following the creation of several fraudulent social media accounts in his name on Facebook and Twitter, where he was once very vocal. He has also stated that he found that politics had gotten “too ugly” and that he wanted to spend more time with his family. In a statement to the Sun-times in Illinois, Sandack said, “It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the people of the 81st District for the past four years in Springfield. But after some cyber security issues arose, I began to re-evaluate my continued public service.”  However, this sounds more like a straw that broke the camel’s back, as he had lamented previously that he wished to spend more time with his family. Republican leaders have 30 days to select a replacement for Sandack, who is up for reelection in November, and has raised three times as much as his challenger.
