Software giant Oracle Corp. was recently breached by an organized Russian hacking group. The cybercriminals targeted Oracle’s MICROS point-of-sale credit card software forcing users to reset their passwords. After discovering the breach, Oracle issued a statement to their customers confirming the breach claiming it “detected and addressed malicious code in a certain legacy Micros systems,” specifically on its internet-connected cash registers used by more than 330,000 retailers, hotels and restaurants. Oracle purchased MICROS in 2014 for $5.3 billion, helping it become one of the top three global point-of sale vendors. While the exact size and scope of the breach is still under investigation, it appears that the Russian hackers broke into at least 700 systems. However, the cybercriminals’ motive for the hack remains unclear.
