The White House has publicly supported two major cyber bills coming to the house floor this week. In two separate Statements of Administration Policy, the White House has voiced support for the House Homeland and Intel bills even though they expressed some concerns over liability protections that they perceive to be to expansive.
According to the White House, “appropriate liability protections should incentivize good cybersecurity practices and should not grant immunity to a private company for failing to act on information it receives about the security of its networks.” The administration worries that overly broad liability protections may remove incentives to protect customer data and personal information, further weakening cybersecurity efforts.
The two bills are expected to easily pass the House but White House support may help efforts for when the bills reach the Senate.
